ABC 936 Hobart (Hobart) interview with Professor Mark Nelson (30/11/10)

Producer Ms Sarah Schofield 03 6235 3664 Summary:

Rheinberger talks to Professor Mark Nelson, Head of General Practice, School of Medicine, University of Tasmania, about an aspirin trial, which Mark says was patented in 1897 but the patent was lost at the end of WWI at the Treaty of Versailles as it was German, a product of Bayer. Nelson adds the Nicholas Family in Melbourne was paid 10,000 pounds to break international copyright honours and produce it in Australia. He adds aspirin deserves the term 'Miracle Drug', and the natural drug on which it is based is called salicylic acid, which is found in green vegetables and relieves pain. It has been around since Hippocrates' time, but it upsets your stomach, so an acidil group was added to counteract this. However, it blocks the action of platelets. Nelson explains the effects of each of these components.

Nelson says the study wants people over 70 who have never had a stroke or heart attack to take aspirin or a placebo tablet each day for five years. He says dementia and bowel cancer are other diseases being tested. The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council and the National Institutes for Health in the US are supporting the study with huge grants. Two nurses in Hobart, two in Launceston and two in Burnie will deal with the study participants. Nelson explains the proceedings of the study, saying contact is kept throughout the year. People who want to be involved can ask their doctors to see if they are enrolled in the study, or ring 1800-728-745. © Media Monitors 2010
